Ministry cracks down on school tours to unusual places

Amid reports of public school tours to unusual places, the Ministry of Education (MoE) today issued guidance on what should be done.

Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussein in a memo to Regional Education Officers and the Principal Education Officer said that the ministry has observed that some schools are undertaking educational tours to locations/places “that do not contribute to better student outcomes”.

He said that with immediate effect the education officers must withdraw permission granted for visits and tours to places “outside the accepted and usual” tour destinations.

The memo said that if they have doubts about what those places may be they should contact his office by email (ceooffice@moe.gov.gy).

Hussein added that for each permission granted henceforth, the officers are to state in writing that “any amendment to the approved list of places to be visited will result in disciplinary action being recommended against the Head teacher and all teachers on the school tour”.

He further said that the MoE will not accept any excuse for the breach of this directive such as, “I didn’t know”.

Hussein said that if permission has already been granted for a tour that is yet to be conducted “you are immediately to do an addendum to that permission and ensure it is delivered and signed for by the Head Teacher”.
