Businessman, Devanand Singh was this afternoon sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by Principal Magistrate Leron Daly for inflicting grievous bodily harm on his daughter and using threatening language.

Singh, who was caught on camera committing the assault, was sentenced 14 months for physically abusing his 25-year-old daughter and four months for threatening language. The sentences will run concurrently.

He was also ordered to stay 1,000 feet away from his daughter for life.

In April of last year the man was charged with the two offences before Magistrate Daly after a video was shared on Facebook where he was seen assaulting the woman.

He was then ordered to stay 1,000 feet away from her for life and was granted bail in the sum of $400,000 after he had pleaded not guilty to the two offences. According to the court, the young woman always has the option of having the protection order changed if she ever wishes to do so.

In the footage seen by this newspaper, Singh could be seen slapping, cuffing and kicking the complainant.

At one point, he pushed her and kicked her into what appeared to be clothes racks in his store. A firearm could be seen tucked in his waistband.

The victim’s brother eventually intervened but this did not stop the man from wanting to continue assaulting her.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement had said that on March 28th, 2022 the victim filed a report in which she alleged that Singh assaulted her on March 25, 2022 at his Kitty business place.

As a result, the police added, an investigation was launched and the businessman was arrested on March 31, 2022. His licensed firearms were subsequently seized, the police said.
