The New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council has an ongoing investigation into the missing ceremonial chain referred to as the Livery Collar or Civic Regalia – which serves as an insignia to show that the wearer is the Mayor and head of the town.

At the swearing in of the new council, PPP/C’s Carol Trim pointed out that the collar placed around the neck of the newly elected Mayor Wainwright McIntosh was not the original livery collar worn over the years by the

previous mayors.

She questioned, “The first thing I looked at the chain that the Mayor has, where is the old chain? The people in the town don’t know, it’s lost, that’s a new chain we must get all these reports before we move forward.”

At a press conference called by the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council today, Stabroek News learnt that it is suspected that the chain went missing sometime in 2020.

The ceremonial chain was last seen in 2018 when Winifred Haywood was elected to be Mayor of the town of New Amsterdam. However, in 2020 when Haywood was reelected a modified chain was placed around her neck – the same modified version McIntosh was adorned with this time around.

Meanwhile, Paula Soloman, Sergeant attached to the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council Constabulary, explained, that the collar would usually be kept in a vault by the town clerk.

Sergeant Soloman noted that an investigation was launched, stating that “my inspector who is my superior he is presently on vacation leave and the CID officer who was attached to the investigation he was to submit a report to the town clerk but he migrated to overseas.”

She could not say when exactly the matter was reported to the police.
