Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ Ravindradat Budhram and a team of Police Officers and Ranks today visited the Rising Sun Turf Club in Berbice, which will be the venue for the Guyana Cup horse racing slated for Sunday, August 13, 2023.

A release from the police said that Budhram and the team walked around the venue and assessed and finalised the traffic arrangements for the event on Sunday, which, if not managed properly, can result in a traffic nightmare given the event’s popularity.

According to Guyana Cup race promoter Nasrudeen Mohamed Junior, this year’s event will have eight races and a total prize of over $24 million. He said $10 million is the purse to be paid just for the feature event. The First prize is $5 million, the release said.

“Every year, we try to better our recent events by putting new requirements in place and having a larger race money every year. This year will be the biggest event out of 15 years, where more than 14 horses will be flown in from Brazil, Suriname and the United States to compete against the best jockeys from across Guyana,” Junior stated.

Police ranks will be out in their numbers and be present on foot and motorcycles to help prevent traffic build-up along the public roadways, the release said.
