A Corentyne woman who was shot on Sunday morning is now fighting for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital while investigators have held her fiancé, Neil Madramootoo, an engineer in Region Six for questioning.

Ashmin Mahadeo, 30, of Lot 25 D Williamsburg, Corentyne, who was shot in the back of her neck resulting in the bullet exiting in the lower area of her jaw, is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit in a critical condition.

Her relatives yesterday relayed that doctors informed them that Mahadeo is currently paralyzed and will likely not be able to speak.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 7:40 a.m.

According to information gathered, Mahadeo and her fiancé,  who have been together for the last seven years were packing things in a vehicle which the fiancé was using as they had a bridal shower planned for the day.

The woman’s brother, Naresh Mahadeo, 32, said that they were asleep in the house when they heard a loud explosion. “When I came out my bed and I come by the door I see my sister lay down by the gate and blood coming through her mouth and I rushed and go out and my wife turn her over and I run out on the street and when I asked he (the fiancé) he said somebody shot her and he go in the house.”

Mahadeo’s wife, a nurse, began doing CPR so as to assist the injured woman in breathing. According to the brother, after he did not see anyone on the street he also returned to offer assistance to his sister.

Detailing her condition yesterday, Mahadeo said, “This morning when I saw her and when I talking to her she respond and shaking her head but when I see the doctor he said she critical, that she paralyze and she can’t speak and if they take the breathing machine out from her she will pass away.”

The brother who is seeking answers as to what transpired said that after the explosion, Madramootoo ran into the house after everyone ran to Mahadeo’s assistance. “When I coming back from the street I see Neil coming out the house”, he said.

The relatives confirmed that investigators have found a firearm in Mahadeo’s room in the ceiling.

Additionally, the family said that at the hospital they questioned the fiancé as to where Mahadeo’s phone was, however, he said, “he don’t know where her phone is and where is his phone and I keep asking if somebody shoot her and if is a robbery her purse was outside and they didn’t take it.”

Furthermore, the brother pointed out that nearby CCTV footage showed no one passing through the street at the time of the shooting. “I keep asking he if he see anything and he seh it happen so fast he didn’t see anything… One time he seh he went by this gate then next time he seh he went by that gate outside so I seh you ain’t see nobody move, nobody run, nobody ride, anything? And he keep saying he ain’t see anything”, he said.

He is pleading with the authorities to properly investigate the matter as he described his sister to be a very kind person.
