Industrial/large customers to face higher tariff during peak periods

Amid heightened demand, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) today announced that industrial/large (Tariff D) customers will face a higher rate during peak periods.

The rate applicable will be $78.91 per kWh. The off peak rate is $57.39 per kWh.

GPL said that the Public Utilities Commission has approved the implementation of a Time of Use  (TOU) Tariff for industrial and large customers.

The TOU tariff will be applied to recorded electricity consumption between the peak hours of 1 pm to 3 pm and 6 pm to 10 pm. The new rate is effective from October 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024.

The current rate will remain unchanged and applicable during off-peak hours.

Rates for residential and small to medium business customers remain unchanged.

On October 4th, GPL announced that as a temporary measure  it will disconnect  large self-generating customers during the period of 6 pm to 10 pm.

A notice from GPL  said that in order to prevent widespread disruptions, it had contacted large industrial customers with self-generation capacity and asked that they self-generate during the peak demand hours from 6 pm to 10 pm.

“Regrettably, only a small percentage of these customers responded positively. This partial response has necessitated the need for GPL to proceed to remove these customers from the grid between 1800 hrs and 2200 hrs daily. This is a temporary but necessary measure for the company to prevent service disruptions”, GPL said.
