Today, hundreds of men from the Joint Services gathered in various locations across the country for a fitness walk in commemoration of the Men on Mission (MOM) initiative, which was officially launched on October 28 last year.

As part of his 1000-Men initiative, President and Commander in Chief, Irfaan Ali, emphasized that MOM aims to shift the strategy in addressing the challenges faced by young boys and men in our society, a release from the Joint Services said.

He stated, “We [men] are the root cause of many problems in society. It is now our time to be the root of the solution, to be the source of positivity, and to build a strong support system.” The initiative’s launch at the Base Camp Ayanganna playfield saw the attendance of government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, members of the Joint Services, special guests, and thousands of men from various sectors of society.

The fitness walk was led by the Chairman of the Joint Service Co-ordinating Council and Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Omar Khan. The walk began at Base Camp Ayanganna, passed through several areas in central Georgetown, and returned to the Thomas Lands base.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken, who led the police participation, said that the successful walk spoke volumes about the initiative and the level of cohesiveness currently underway. He stressed the need for continued efforts to promote positive behaviours in all communities.

Brigadier Khan noted that the initiative has already attained significant milestones, including building and renovating homes, organizing mentorship activities, and conducting medical outreaches across the country. He commended the services for their role in the initiative’s progress and also acknowledged the support received from various entities.

The Men on Mission initiative aims to impress upon men the importance of responsibility, being role models.
