The Stabroek Market wharf roof has collapsed, causing significant damage and losses for fish vendors in the area.
One person has been rescued from the ruins and has gone to the hospital with injuries to his back and neck. Police are on the scene assessing the situation.
According to a sign posted at the wharf, the area had been condemned for a while, and vendors were not supposed to be in the vicinity. However, they continued to conduct business in the area despite the safety risks.
Witnesses at the scene noted that several persons were seen with cuts on their bodies as a result of the collapse. It is unclear how many individuals were injured in the incident.
Present at the scene are officials including Β minister within the Ministry of Local Government, Β Sonia Parag, Minister in the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar, as well as members of the police service, fire service, and EMTs. The Mayor and City Council is also present to assist with the situation.

In response to the recent collapse of the roof of the decrepit Stabroek Market Wharf earlier today (Wednesday, April 17, 2024), the Guyana Fire Service has initiated immediate and comprehensive measures to address the situation and assist those affected.
At present, one ambulance and one fire tender remain on standby at the scene, ensuring readiness for any further emergencies. Additionally, the remaining unsafe structure will be promptly demolished to prevent any further risk to public safety, while the removal of the rubble will begin tonight.
Earlier today, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Robeson Benn, Minister Local Government Hon. Sonia Parag, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Hon. Deodat Indar and His Worship the Mayor of Georgetown Mr. Alfred Mentore, along with other senior officials were on-site to assess the situation firsthand and provide assurance to vendors and citizens affected by this incident.
The Guyana Fire Service responded to the incident at approximately 10:27 hours, Water tenders #105, #118, and #95, Fire Boat Protector #8, two Ambulances, twenty firefighters, the chief Emergency medical technician along with four emergency medical technicians, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters initiated search and rescue operations, ensuring the safety of all affected individuals.
Five individuals sustained injuries, with emergency medical technicians promptly providing onsite medical assistance. Two of the injured parties were transported to Georgetown Public Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
The government, in collaboration with a comprehensive team including the Guyana Fire Service, is actively coordinating efforts to address the aftermath of the collapse.
A comprehensive plan of action will be released by 16:30 hrs today, outlining the steps to be taken to mitigate the impact of this incident and ensure the safety and well-being of all concerned.
