Bagotstown labourer critical after chopped during row

Ronald Deen, 50, a labourer of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is in  a critical condition after he was chopped during a row with a security guard at Eccles Industrial site on Friday.

The police said yesterday that inquiries disclosed that the victim and the perpetrator are known to each other. On the date and time mentioned, the victim, along with several other persons, was consuming alcohol at the fishery, which is located at Eccles EBD.

It is reported that the perpetrator approached the gathering and asked them to leave because he wanted to secure the building. It is alleged that the victim then held onto the perpetrator’s leg. The perpetrator asked him to release his leg, but the victim refused.

The victim and the perpetrator then had a heated exchange of words, and the perpetrator pulled out a short cutlass from his  waist and dealt the victim a chop to the left side of his forehead.

The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were summoned, and the victim was escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is receiving  treatment. His condition is regarded as critical.

The suspect was arrested, and the weapon retrieved. He remains in custody.
