Two Rosignol houses go up in flames

Two houses located in the same yard at Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice went up in flames around 3:15 am yesterday apparently by arson and a 24-year-old suspect is in custody.

The alleged assailant’s sister showing Stabroek News the mark left after reportedly being forced by police to kneel on a bottle cap for several minutes. She said she was only instructed to get up after it seemed like she would faint.

A push cart operator was stabbed to death on Saturday night following an altercation with a woman over $1,000.

GPL suffered shutdown in Demerara system

Despite its assurances to the public of reliable service for Christmas, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) experienced a series of technical problems on Saturday and yesterday, including a total shutdown of the Demerara system,  leading to frequent blackouts which left citizens up and down the coast and in the city fuming.

Private sector lobbies opposition over anti-money laundering bill

The private sector earlier this month held separate meetings with APNU and the AFC to urge support for the anti-money laundering bill and proposed that the parliamentary select committee on the bill holds its hearings in public and it also forwarded a compromise for the procurement commission.

Cotton Tree man dies after bike slams into pole

At about 0320h today, police say that Fazal Baksh, 37 years, of Cotton Tree, WCB, was riding a motor cycle along the main road at D’Edward Village, WCB, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a utility pole.

Parliament committee to meet next month on Muri PGGS – Roopnaraine

Chairman of the Sectoral Committee on Natural Resources Dr Rupert Roopnaraine says he will be seeking to convene a meeting early in January to deal with the issue of the Permission for Geological and Geophysical Survey (PGGS) issued to Muri Brasil Ventures Inc and the answers Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud provided at an earlier meeting when quizzed.
