U.N. urges Venezuela’s Maduro to uphold rule of law

GENEVA,  (Reuters) – The United Nations today criticised President Nicolas Maduro’s government for curtailing the powers of the chief state prosecutor and called on it to uphold the rule of law and freedom of assembly in Venezuela amid a clampdown on protesters.

Diversified economy No.1 priority

A diversified economy is the number one priority for the country and the APNU+AFC government does not want a private sector that is laid back and looking to it for all fundamental and innovative changes,  Minister of Finance Winston Jordan says.

Echilibar Villas, the government housing complex where Minister Simona Broomes was offered accommodation. Vice President and Minister of Indigenous Affairs Sydney Allicock is one of the Ministers presently being housed here. When Stabroek News visited the complex yesterday it was observed that at least four of the nearly 30 villas were unoccupied. It is understood however that the complex has poor drainage and regularly floods so few are willing to accept accommodation here.

Jordan, Isaacs silent on Broomes house rental

Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs has gone mum on the issue of  ministerial housing rentals while the country’s chief financial officer, Finance Minister Winston Jordan refuses to explain who approved the expenditure.

EU says no more sugar aid

GTT sacks 15 more workers

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) has terminated the services of 15 more workers, according to head of the Guyana Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union (PTWU) Harold Shepherd, who says the company breached a court order requiring that it meaningfully consult with the union before proceeding.

Code of Conduct amendments gazetted

The first guiding principle of the recently gazetted Integrity Commission (Amend-ment of Code of Conduct) Order 2017 states that a person in public life shall be accountable to the public for his or her decisions and actions and “shall submit himself or herself to scrutiny and criticism.”
