Caribbean seen as at risk of financial over-regulation

(Jamaica Gleaner) The measures mandated by the Financial Action Task Force, FATF, and its regional arm, while meant to constrain illicit financing of terrorists and other schemes, is now putting undue burden on non-profit operations that could drive then into the ground.

Lawyers blast investigators, say raids were Gestapo-like operation

(Jamaica Observer) Two of three lawyers representing the five people accused of milking State coffers of over $50 million, among other illegal acts, yesterday came out swinging in defence of their clients, charging that the allegations were false and unsubstantiated while lambasting the investigators for using unnecessary tactics to detain the individuals.

(Jamaica Gleaner) Investigators have charged that nearly $50 million of public funds was diverted to the personal use of discarded Education Minister Ruel Reid and Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) President, Professor Fritz Pinnock, through a number of schemes, including one that mirrors the Career Advancement Programme-Youth Employment Solutions (CAP-YES).

Jamaica: 95-year-old happy for new home

(Jamaica Observer) Ninety-five year-old Nora Johnson, a resident of Mendez district in Point Hill, St Catherine, is the latest recipient of a new home under the Government’s Indigent Housing Programme, which is expected to significantly improve her standard of living.

The Rio Grande runs beneath the bridge from which the dean in the Faculty of Science at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE), Fiju Matthews, is believed to have jumped on Saturday.

(Jamaica Gleaner) Divers from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) are expected to join the search for an educator who went missing on the weekend after he allegedly jumped off a bridge into the Rio Grande at St Margaret’s Bay in Portland.
