Who is the greatest?

Three weeks ago, I came upon a story published on the internet captioned ‘The name of the game is domination’ by Albert Silver.

In Section C of the Tata Steel 2011 chess tournament which is currently being played in the Netherlands, Tania Sachdev registered as the lowest-rated player of all three sections, A, B, and C. With three rounds to be played, Tania is already close to achieving a coveted grandmaster norm and is currently in sixth place in Section  C of the tournament, competing among male grandmasters and some international masters. In photo, Tania examines the chess board carefully during her game with J W De Jong (2437) whom she defeated in 46 moves.

Nakamura v Vachier-Lagrave

In the Tata Steel 2011 chess tournament which ends today, it is world champion Vishy Anand and US champion Hikaru Nakamura who lead the field with seven points each in Group A after ten rounds.

The London Chess Classic was played from December 8-15, 2010 at the Olympic Conference Centre, Kensington, England.

Hou v Humpy

The 2010 Women’s World Chess Championship is being held at Hatay, Turkey and ends today.

The youngest, and new national chess champion of Guyana, 19-year-old Taffin Khan, from West Demerara. Today is the final day of the National Schools’ Championship chess tournament. The Guyana Chess Federation hopes that Taffin’s success in chess will inspire other youths to become involved in the game and assist in spreading it within their various communities.

Schools’ championship ends today

Today marks the second and final day of the National Schools Chess Championship, where schools from some of the regions are given the opportunity to oppose each other in the wonderful game called chess.

Taffin Khan: The new champion

Guyana has crowned a new teenage chess champion in Taffin Khan, 19, the youngest ever to my knowledge since the Guyana Chess Association was established in 1972.

‘Moves for Life’

Last Tuesday, the Government of South Africa made a giant stride for the popularization and development of chess in the country when it launched the Moves For Life chess programme at a gala dinner.

The two winners of the Shanghai Masters Tournament Alexei Shirov and Vladimir Kramnik. In the background are Bilbao organiser Juan Carlos Fernandez and Tian Hongwei, Vice General Secretary of the Chinese Chess Association. The final stage of the tournament will be played in Bilbao, Spain.

It is now anybody’s tournament

At the halfway point in the DDL Topco Juices Chess Tournament, Taffin Khan, Omar Shariff and Shiv Nandalall  are leading with four points each with four games to go.
