Work starts on Doppler radar tower

After a number of setbacks in the Caribbean region the Hydrometeorological Service has finally been able to start work on the radar tower for the long awaited Doppler Radar.

Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud told a press conference on Friday that the service, which falls under the responsibility of that Ministry, was able to commence work for the installation of the radar following the signing of a contract for the erection of the radar tower. The Doppler radar will provide notice of severe weather systems and enable better preparation.

The minister was at the time addressing the achievements of the agricultural sector during the past year at a press conference in the ministry’s boardroom. He mentioned further that the department has investigated meteorological and water resources phenomena to the extent of being in a position to issue warnings when necessary.

Additionally, the service was able to computerize some 30 years of archived and current data. The past year also saw the service implementing a project to double the number of weather monitoring stations in December and this would increase the number of stations from 50 to 100.
