Duo remanded over larceny of ‘scrap metal’ from Guysuco

Two men appeared in the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of stealing over $270,000 worth of items from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) and were remanded to prison.

Dexter Gardener, 34, of Uitvlugt Front, West Coast Demerara (WCD) who had previously appeared on the simple larceny charge, had pleaded not guilty and was remanded while Raul Vanderstoop, 32, of Lot 42 Sara Lodge, WCD pleaded not guilty to the same charge and was also remanded to prison by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

The previous charge for Gardner was substituted and the duo was jointly charged.

It is alleged that the men stole the items on November 28, 2006 at Boerasirie, WCD.

Vanderstoop told the court that he had been hired to pick up the items as “scrap metal” but the driver of the canter he was in had left and he was caught. “I was just a porter man on the canter,” he declared.

The duo will return to court on February 8 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
