Book club showing domestic violence drama

The Georgetown Book Club is hosting a public screening of the award winning film `Once were Warriors’ on Saturday, February 17.

The movie, set in urban Auckland, New Zealand tells the story of the effect of domestic violence on the family, a press release from the club said. It is centred on the Heke family and follows a period of several weeks in the family’s life showing patriarch Jake’s frequent outbursts of violence and the effect it has on his family.

The film won the ‘Best Film’ award at the New Zealand Film and Television Awards, the Durban International Film Festival, the Montreal Film Festival and the Rotterdam Film Festival. The club advises that the 103-minute film is rated and contains graphic violence and language and is for an audience 18-years-old and over. It will be aired at 5.45 pm at the Top Pavilion of the Everest Cricket Club at Thomas Lands.

The club said admission is free and donations will be accepted for Help and Shelter. Refreshments will also be on sale.
