Six male inmates escape from NOC

Six male inmates of the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) in Essequibo escaped from the facility on Friday after they were left unsupervised on an agriculture plot and so far police have managed to recapture two.

The police yesterday pleaded with the parents and the relatives of the inmates to hand them over, stressing that harbouring them is an offence.

Essequibo Commander Superintendent Wreford Johnson told Stabroek News that between 11:30 am and noon on Friday, 15 male inmates were working on an agriculture plot at the back of the building. They were left unsupervised briefly, he said, and some managed to escape.

This newspaper could not ascertain how exactly the juvenile inmates made a successful escape from the facility, but sources said that around 2:30 yesterday morning one of them was recaptured at the Adventure Ferry Stelling, Essequibo. Another was later caught in the Onderneeming Backlands.

Police yesterday said that following the escape they were alerted and searches were launched.

Investigations are in progress while the search continues for the others.
