Mashramani going ahead as planned

Mashramani is going ahead as scheduled this weekend with a street parade among other activities though concerns have been raised about revelry at a time when terror is gripping the country.

The decision to go ahead comes at a difficult time, according to Mash Coordinator, Lennox Canterbury. He said the activity was still on because cancelling it could have serious implications for Carifesta, which is being hosted here in a few months.

A meeting was held yesterday with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony and other stakeholders and after much consideration, they said Mashramani is on.

Canterbury told Stabroek News that the Mashramani committee was aware of the sentiments out there and was sympathetic to residents at Bartica and Lusignan who have suffered multiple tragedies within their communities. He said several activities were cancelled after the Lusignan tragedy.

Canterbury said many organisations and government entities have committed to Mashramani and they remain committed even as the nation is faced with tragedy. He said the committee hoped Guyanese would come out and celebrate in whatever way they choose.

“We are not going to tell people how to pass the day. They can come out and just view the floats or join in if they feel like it but we hope to have a successful Mashramani,” he stated.

So far, close to 20 bands are confirmed for the float parade including a few religious organisations. Canterbury said the committee was heartened that the religious groups have joined in this year.
