Miner dies after pit caves in

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of miner Mortimer Clarke from Farm, EBE.
According to a police press release, Clarke was mining in a pit at Goat Creek Backdam, Essequibo River, around 10 am on Wednesday, when the pit caved in on him. He was rushed to the Bartica Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at about 11:30 am.

According to a family member, Clarke is in his 40s and he left his home about a week ago to go on one of his regular mining trips. The relative stated that they did not have much information about the incident but said that a brother of the deceased had identified the body at the Lyken’s Funeral Home.
