Drivers remanded over footballer, UG student deaths

Two drivers charged with death by dangerous driving were both remanded to prison on Monday when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Nigel DeVeldt of North Ruimveldt, was remanded to prison shortly after Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read the charge of causing death by dangerous driving to him.

Meanwhile, Kurt Persaud of John Street, Campbellville, was also remanded to prison shortly after Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin read the same charge to him.

It is alleged that on December 25, at Joseph Pollydore Street, DeVeldt was the driver of the motor vehicle that was involved in an accident which resulted in the death of Selwyn Bailey.

It is also alleged that on December 26, at Clive Lloyd Drive, Persaud was the driver of the motor vehicle that was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of Kellon Griffith of Alanticville, East Coast Demerara.
DeVeldt  will appear again in court on January 5, while Persaud will return on January 22.
