Mel Sankies was elected president of the Lusignan Golf Club at the Club’s Annual General Meeting held recently.
Brian Hackett is the vice-president, with Ronald Bulkan acting as secretary.
The committee members are Gavin Todd and Mike Mangal. Brian Gladford will serve as the club captain.
At the AGM which was chaired by outgoing president, Hilbert Shields, the various accomplishments during 2007 were highlighted.
Among those were the move into the new clubhouse building and the many additions and improvements done to the course.
There was also the hosting of the highly successful Smirnoff Open Tournament in November which was won by overseas-based player, Jaipaul, the MACORP Tournament and Le Meridien Tournament.
The meeting noted with sadness the passing of club member and executive committee member, Ian Hercules as well as the unspeakable tragedy of the slaughter of eleven persons in Lusignan one of whom, Ronnie Thomas, was a caddie.
Meanwhile, the 2008 season has commenced after prolonged rainfall in December, January and February which prevented the holding of any tournaments.
At the inaugural 2008 tournament, the Captain’s Tournament (outgoing), the winner was Mike Mangal with a gross score of 77 (net 69) winning on a countback from Patrick Prashad also with a net 69 ( gross 77). In third place was Ronald Bulkan with a net 70 ( gross 90) who edged out newcomer Gavin Todd, also with a net 70 (gross 98). The Longest Drive prize was won by Brian Glasford and Nearest to Pin by Colin Ming. Sponsor and outgoing Captain, Jeremy Burgess thanked members for participating and for supporting club tournaments. The next tournament will be held today and is being sponsored by De Sinco Trading.
Some local golfers will be participating in the Open Golf Tournament at St. Andrews, Trinidad, which will be held during March 6 – 9 and a team of some twelve is expected to participate in the RBTT 2008 Invitational at the Paramaribo Golf Club during March 15 & 16.
The Lusignan Golf Club wishes to once again thank the many sponsors from the corporate community who have proved to be invaluable in helping the Club maintain its viability and to keep golfing alive in Guyana.
The Club and its members wish to remind the public that a valuable contribution is made to the village of Lusignan by way of the thirty plus caddies who find part-time employment, and the nine full-time employees who are all dependent on the continued existence of this golf course.
