A taxi driver was held at gunpoint by two passengers on Wednesday and after a scuffle the men escaped with the vehicle’s radio set and jewellery. A suspect has since been arrested.

Police said in a statement yesterday that they are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at Princes and Smyth streets, Georgetown, at about 7 pm. During the incident Roy Ramjawan, 25 years, a taxi driver of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara, was attacked and robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

Investigations revealed that Ramjawan was hired by two men from Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara to go to Princes Street.  However upon arrival, Ramjwan was held at gunpoint and robbed of $10,000 cash, the vehicle’s radio set and his personal jewellery.

A scuffle subsequently ensued between the perpetrators and the victim, who managed to escape in his motor vehicle.

According to the release, a report was later made to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and based on information and the description given, the police arrested a suspect at Pouderoyen. The man has been identified as one of the perpetrators. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
