Richard Ishmael, QC emerge winners

Richard Ishmael Secondary and Queen’s College (QC) emerged winners after stiff rivalry when competition continued in the GBTI impromptu speaking contest for fourth formers.

In a press release GBTI said the Richard Ishmael Secondary team was better composed than their Annandale Secondary School rivals in “a very close match up” where they scored 515 points. Annandale scored 511 points.

The winners selected the topics: ‘Guyana is a tropical paradise’, ‘The word “war” should be banned from the English language’ and ‘Why do youths prefer using “slang” to proper English?’ Meanwhile, Annandale chose the topics: ‘The importance of humour in my life’, ‘Winning is not as important as how you play the game,’ and ‘Someone who has inspired me much in life is…’

In the second match of the day QC battled a determined St Joseph High to walk away with a 14-point win. Queen’s chose topics: ‘Punctuality is important for school students’, ‘A healthy lifestyle includes…’ and ‘Volunteerism is essential for secondary school students.’ Queen’s scored 695 points.

St Joseph’s selected topics: ‘Honesty is the best policy’, ‘You can make a child feel special by …’ and ‘If I could accomplish one thing in my life I would like to …’ St Joseph scored 681 points.
The judges’ panel comprised Joan Kendall, Abiola Inniss and Dr Joyce Jonas.
