Two held after taxi passengers robbed

A ‘taxi driver’ and his accomplice have been arrested following an early morning armed robbery committed on two taxi passengers on Stone Avenue, Campbellville.

Police in a release said that around 3.30 am yesterday Chrishendatt Kanhai and Madia Ramnarine of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, were attacked and robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

According to the police, the two victims hired a taxi on Sheriff Street to go to Eccles. The driver of the vehicle began travelling through Stone Avenue. The police said that when the two persons voiced their concern, the taxi driver pulled out a handgun and held up the two men. The driver was joined by another man who rode up on a bicycle. They then took away a cell phone and $60,000 from the victims and escaped.

However, quick response by the police led to the arrest of the two suspects in a house on Campbell Avenue. The motor vehicle PHH 5759, which was suspected to have been used, was also recovered.

The two suspects have been identified by the victims and will be charged shortly, the police have said.
