In a press release the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) said in recent weeks the number of consumer complaints about the poor quality of cellular phones sold on the local market has increased significantly. Within the last week it received over seven complaints, the GNBS said.

Consumers are also advised to buy cellular phones only from registered dealers where they can obtain written warranties, receipts and get redress if their phones become defective after use. Consumers should also check for signs of scratches, stains and fading on the keypads and display areas and evidence of screwdriver use to determine whether the phone had been broached.

The GNBS said consumers should also ensure that they receive an original battery and charger by verifying that the brand of the battery corresponds with that of the phone. Buyers should also ensure that they are given an operation manual in English Language.
