The allegation made against the union leader is just that, the GTU’s General Secretary, Coretta McDonald declared at a press conference yesterday. “As members of the GTU…we don’t believe what was peddled in the air”, she said. The union’s executives are rallying behind their leader “because we know the kind of person he is”, she added.

King was taken into police custody on Wednesday after a report was made and while noting that it is a sensitive issue, McDonald said at this point, it is a mere allegation and only the courts can find someone guilty.  Describing King as a man of integrity, she said that he has been championing the cause of teachers, women and children.

The General Secretary revealed that they had listened to King’s story and he has been cooperating with the police. She said that after the report was made, he was contacted by police and asked to report to the station and did so. “What we are having now are allegations and I wouldn’t want to go into that because I wouldn’t want to be interfering with anything, with the due process that is supposed to be going on right now”, McDonald stressed.

Meantime, yesterday afternoon, the union leader was taken to his doctor, accompanied by police. “He is there for some check-up because like everything else, he has been traumatized by this entire situation”, McDonald said. She stated that no charges had been filed, asserting that if there was enough evidence, charges would have been laid already. She declared that King “is not under arrest” stating that the police would have asked him to report to continue their investigations and “that is what he is doing right now”.
