Prime Minister Sam Hinds yesterday represented Guyana in a meeting on tropical deforestation that featured representatives from several of the G20 countries.

Guyana was one of three non-G20 countries which attended the meeting at Clarence House in London, which was convened by Britain’s Prince Charles.  The other non-G20 nations represented were Norway and Gabon, who were represented by their Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Defence Minister Ali Bongo Ondimba. These nations were invited because of their countries’ leading positions on combating deforestation, a GINA release said.  Among those in attendance were US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Speaking after the meeting, Hinds, said that “for Guyana to be asked to attend this meeting during the G20 summit is an unprecedented global endorsement of Guyana’s leadership on addressing deforestation, and  in particular President (Bharrat) Jadgeo’s recent international advocacy. I told the leaders of my belief that the majority of Guyana’s population supports efforts to combat deforestation.” Hinds was at the time representing President  Jagdeo, who  returned to Guyana for the funeral of former President Janet Jagan.

President  Jagdeo recently unveiled the first part of Guyana’s low carbon development strategy-a paper which sets out Guyana’s view on how the United Nations Framework Con-vention on Climate Change can create incentives to avoid deforestation.  The remainder of Guyana’s low carbon development strategy will be published in Georgetown before the end of May.

Guyana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mr Laleshwar Singh and Presidential Advisor Kevin Hogan also attended yesterday’s gathering.

GUyanese should be proud of this achievement.regardless of who critises them for corruption and poor governance(REpulican Think Tanks)the PPP and the government is moving ahead with the bussiness of improving the country. To be invited to the G20 meeting to be heard is an astounding rebuke of all the naysayers and haters of the govt.Guyana has alot to offer the world and this is proof that the world recognises that. HATS OFF TO THE PRESIDENT for his vision, persistance will bear fruit.

    • NeNe UNITED STATES says:

KittyKat, what are you talking about. When the government acts irrationally or fails to act, there will be criticism. The British did a documentary some time back about Guyana’s untouched forestry region and the benefits to be derived there. Someone will soon cotton on to the idea and move in with the Government’s permission. Guyana has something they want, so don’t laugh yet!!!!

    • KittyKat CANADA says:

wonder why there was total silence of Fat Boy’s excess and greed. But i do agree with you when the Govt. acts in a way thats not in the best interest of what they have been elected for’ then by all means we should criticise them but as you may know that criticisim is a two way street. Even the most outrageous critisms do have merits, but when done in exceess it tends to have the opposite effect.criticise and scold your kids when they are not on the right path but praise them and show love proves to be much more effective than constant nagging. We all should try to emulate the path of our now deceased Matriarc Janet>>>>>>>.one love

kitty kat i don’t know which fat boy excess and greed you talking about. what i do know however is that the pee pee pee excesses and greed is unprecedented in the history of guyana. like the saying, blame everyone else except yourself.

This is improving the country? How so?

List all the major achievements of the PPP for the past 17 years I am not aware of many of them.

    • Soldier UNITED STATES says:

You know all Samaroo,,,When last you visited Guyana? Or Burnham chase out you whole family??? You must have some far off cousin living there so write them a line and tell them you will like to pay a visit and you will see developments all over the country for yourself,,,you brobably accustomed to Guyana in the 70’s and 80’s with the run down infrastructures squatting on the roadsides with hugh garbage heaps at your front door…

    • Sarkar CANADA says:

What is the achievement to benefit Guyana?? Being an invitee???? This meeting was just about GATHERING INFO TO PRESENT AN ARGUMENT FOR EMERGENNCY FUNDS VS CARBON CREDITS. Tell us what was ACHIEVED!!!”The Prince argues that world leaders should be working together to set up financing mechanisms to protect the rainforests. For example a proportion of the money raised through carbon markets could go towards paying developing countries to ensure trees are not felled and rainforest communities have other forms of income.” Now tell us what is the big achievement to benefit the people of Guyana??? This meeting was just about a proposal and the main intent was to attempt to pressure the G20. Who holds the final say??? We may still end-up like Brazil being (as Joe said) “given a loan to go and hug the trees”!!! Remember LOANS must be repaid ++++!!!

    • Brandon Samaroo UNITED STATES says:

Soldier boy, I am in Guyana much more often than you can count.

The difference between you and me is that I can easily see what is real and what is not.

I am also not easily goo goo ga gaed by facades where as many people like yourself when you show up to Guyana you see one and 2 big house and you are like oh my god Guyana is heaven on earth.

Soldier next time you are there go and visit some of the poor people, go and spend time with the people in the flooded out areas that are under water for weeks on end and ask them how they are doing.

Go and talk to a few rice farmers and some sugar cane workers and see how they are doing and do me a favor when you are there ask them how hopeful they are that their children will not be doing what they are doing for a living but better.

BS when last were you in Guyana?
When last you spend some time with the poor in your very own neighborhood right where you live?
I am quite sure there are many right there so you do not have to go to Guyana to see them.
When last you cooked some thing and took it for the poor and destitute in your very own neighbourhood right where you live?
Or will you tell us there are no poor people suffering, suffering even worse in your very own neighbourhood right where you live than in Guyana?
Kindly tell Soldier and me what you see there in your America.Thank you

    • Brandon Samaroo UNITED STATES says:

I have said it before and I will say it again PPP = PNC they are one and the same if one is paying 5 cents and one was paying no cents it is irrelevant.

Oh come on now John you know exactly which FatBoy i’m talking about.stop burying your head in the sand.Greed and excess in guyana is not unprecedented as you and the ilks of you would want us to believe. Its funny you deny knowledge of Fat Boy and his wanton destruction of Guyana but you crave for the return of the good old days of PNC illegal dominance.

What is the use? Do these reps even pretend to understand the issues at stake? I doubt it. A knowledgeable rep like Janet Bulkhan should hava attended instead. But i guess its all about giving party people more perks.
