Drivers should exercise care, courtesy and caution

Dear Editor,

It is disturbing to see so many accidents recently.  Lives are being destroyed, families left in anguish for loss of loved ones, and in many cases those who died were the sole breadwinners.

Why are there so many accidents?  It is definitely the thrill of speeding, carelessness, and over confidence in some cases.  I have noticed many learn to drive from parents, families and friends and imbibe their bad driving habits, in addition to developing their own.

It is heartrending to read in the newspapers this early Monday morning of August 17 that a husband and wife perished.  The case of the two children, cousins, who were wiped out in another gruesome accident, is so unfair, so sad.  I can feel the pain of the parents.

The speed limit has increased.  That was necessary and understandable owing to the volume of vehicles and kinds of vehicle now being manufactured.   But why remove the police with the radar guns?

I believe that accidents were fewer when the police were more aggressive, and when their presence was frequently visible on the various highways.  I suggest that the aggressiveness be reinvented, and reinstituted at the earliest opportunity.  Even if one life is saved, then it will be good for all Guyana.

The people of Guyana, including myself, my family and drivers in my business should always practice the three C’s:  care, courtesy and caution.  These are the hallmarks of an excellent defensive driver.

My sympathies to the relatives of the deceased, and also to the government and people of Guyana, for the loss of our human resources; all Guyana has lost.

Yours faithfully,
Roshan Khan
