A Guyanese reporter, who was reportedly working illegally in St. Maarten, was among two, who were “targeted” by that country’s immigration service.

The Saint Martin News Network reported that immigration officers raided the Today Newspaper on Friday after they were tipped off by a disgruntled employee that the management of Today had at least two persons working illegally for the company. SMN News reported that a well-known local reporter had been having problems with the management of Today who suspended her.

The news network reported that the Today Management decided to remove the person as a reporter and assigned her as their translator. “This however, did not sit well with the reporter so she contacted immigration on more than one occasion informing them that the Today has hired two persons illegally. One of the reporters who was targeted is Sophia Jordan from Guyana”, the report stated.

SMN News reported that the managing editor of the Today, Hilbert Haar visited the immigration department on Thursday hoping to resolve the matter, but even though he was promised that immigration would not visit the Newspaper’s office, the contrary took place on Friday.

According to the report, Haar was invited to the Philipsburg Police Station on Friday where he was questioned about the illegal worker. Immigration officers reportedly told Haar he would be charged with human smuggling. In an invited comment, Prosecutor Rienk Mud said his office was aware of the situation. Mud said the case is under investigation and if it is proven that, the Today indeed hired an illegal they would be issued with a fine, the SMN News reported.

I hope the prosecutor will see the folly of his ways and not institute human smuggling charges. The belittling of human smuggling accusation in this instance is unwarranted and the prosecutor should apologize to all victims of this practice. An immigration violation is not human smuggling.

    • bajegal UNITED STATES says:

Borapork, you Guyanese always want people to apologize to you. You all need to apologize to the people of all of the countries you live in illegally for causing them to have to use their human resources and money to track you all down and deport you. Guyanese are one of the main reasons why many countries are changing their immigration policies. People are trying to maintain order in their countries, and you all keep migrating to their countries in large numbers causing chaos.

    • bajegal UNITED STATES says:

Witch Dr., you said, “Bagegal i hope your piece of rock survive the rising sea level.” For the sake of all of the thousands of Guyanese who live in Barbados and Guyana who depend on money earned in Barbados, I hope Barbados survives.

  1. freespeech UNITED STATES says:

who gives a crap who is illegal and who is working illegally.

that is life and its happening all over the world, no one cares.

    • Freespeech , we patriotic bajans care who are illegal and are working illegally because it is hurting us , socio-economically . The government of Guyana must provide for guyanese at home and it must now prepare for the repatriation of many guyanese now residing in other countries . Freespeech , you are living well in the USA but you should return to Guyana and help the inept government to find ways & means to develop the country and stop guyanese from fleeing their homeland .
“Where there is no vision – the people perish” .

    • Soldier (Opposition Forces at Work) UNITED STATES says:

Wiggins,,,Why don’t you confine Bajans to Barbados, they are fleeing to all parts of the world as well??? Is this as a result of the Good Governance by the Thompson Administration???

    • dark side of the moon UNITED STATES says:

If you feel so strongly about illegal then you would agree that all barbadian illegal who are in the USA should return to their homeland because according to you it is hurting the country econmically.

    • Sanderson Rowe BARBADOS says:

I have sympathy for Guyanese or any other nationality, who through hardships at home, try to make a better life for themselves outside, but its must be done legally. But such irresponsible and immature mouthings as we have just read from FREESPEECH, is typical of the mischief and contempt that such comfortably overseas based Guyanese have for their less privilege compatriots.

    • Joe UNITED STATES says:

Wiggins, as a Guyanese I fell the pain, suffering and hopelessness of some of my less fortunate brothers and sisters. Sometimes it brings tears to my eyes, but I can find no fault with your argument, I understand your side of the matter too. I hope and pray that someday soon my wandering people can find peace and prosperity in their own homeland. Peace be with you my brother.

      Joe.

    • bajegal UNITED STATES says:

Freespeech, did you tell President Jagdeo and others in the Guyanese government that they shouldn’t care about the Mormons being illegal in Guyana?

Most people care about illegal migration, that is why we are seeing an increase in deportations all over the world. Yesterday I read that Puerto Ricans sent police with tear gas into a shanty town that migrants from the Dominican Republic and elsewhere have set up. Puerto Rico has a 16% unemployment rate, so Puerto Ricans want foreigners out.

I know it is pointless to tell you this, but overseas Guyanese need to return to Guyana enmasse and develop it, so that Guyanese won’t have to worry about being deported there.

    • SWAT UNITED STATES says:

      S,

Your comments are misplaced and should be directed to the GY government not to Wiggins.Wiggins…continue to hit them were it hurts.

    • Witch Dr. CANADA says:

To the Bajans here,”to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”.In the near future the clean air that you breath, you would be grateful to the GOV and PPL of GY.And we all know what effect the lack of clean air can have on the brain.

  3. bajegal UNITED STATES says:

I like the idea of charging people who hire illegal aliens with “human smuggling” as well as fining them. Barbados needs to start doing that to people who hire illegal Guyanese and many other illegal aliens. Thousands of Guyanese work illegally in many countries, yet recently I noticed that two Venezuelan brothers were given 6 month prison sentences and fined for entering Guyana illegally, and now there is the infamous case of Guyanese wanting to deport Mormon missionaries. Guyanese would be hypocrites to complain about the St. Maarten government targeting the illegal Guyanese reporter. Guyanese deport people too.

    • Sanderson Rowe BARBADOS says:

I would not classify Guyanese as hypocrites for deporting people who are not legal.Their actions are justifiable.
Do unto others as they are doing to you.

    • SWAT UNITED STATES says:

      B,
A law was recently passed in ARIZONA finding businesses that hire illegals….guess what happen before it became effective….a workers shortage. It does work.

    • bajegal UNITED STATES says:

Sanderson Rowe, you said, “I would not classify Guyanese as hypocrites for deporting people who are not legal. Their actions are justifiable.” I meant, Guyanese who support the deportation of Mormons from Guyana would be hypocritical in criticizing the government of St. Maarten for deporting illegal Guyanese. I think every government in the world has the right to deport illegal aliens. I live legally in the U.S. I think Americans have the right to deport illegal Bajans. I strongly believe in law and order.

    • turbo UNITED STATES says:

bajegal i agree with you the mormons are not working in guyana for no one but their church no salary is given to
them from the govt.of guyana , they bare giving their
services to the poor guyanese people free no charge, they
are not a burden on the guyana govt. they are doing what
the guyana govt. will not do for their own poor citizens.

      here Bajegal.

Magistrate Priya Beharry jailed the two Venezuelan brothers for six (6) months each and fine them 30,000 each.

Two weeks ago Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud was in
discussion with the Surinamese authorities to reopen the recently closed backtrack route so that Guyanese can travel to that country illegally AGAIN.

  4. Deze Tante NETHERLANDS says:

Eh!eh! THIS AUNTY thought that you wer traped in some OUTER-NET taken over by COB-WEB!Laws of every country must be OBEYED.It is quite unfortunate for this journalist;but THE LAW IS THE LAW!
The St Maarten immigration seems to have a mis-understanting with the human smuggle and some other law.Once one enters a country legally they are not SMUGGELED IN.Employers are always FINED for breaking the law or not meeting requirements.

    • Sandra NETHERLANDS ANTILLES says:

The paper was threatened with human smuggling because they refused to cooperate with immigration.

The reporter was being hidden and they refused to say where she lived or the address that they had for her on file or give her telephone number.

that is where the issue came up. They were hiding her so she does not get deported.

But she did not turn herself in as her manager told her to. She instead decided to leave on her own. The reason being is that if she is deported, she cannot return for 5 years.

  5. SWAT UNITED STATES says:

It is time for countries to clean house of GY illegal wherever they reside. They need to go back and enjoy 17 years of progress.

  6. MACK UNITED STATES says:

I know that living in Guyana is not a bed of roses, but I believe it is time we Guyanese stop embarrasing ourselves by going to these small islands in the West Indies all of which can fit in the mouth of the Essiquibo River to be humiliated. No, working in Guyana would not make you rich, nor is working for someone else wherever you live, but being illegal in someonel’s country is not the answer neither. So please my people, have some patience, things will get better in our homeland if you are willing to make the sacrifice and vote this useless government out and elect one which would turn our country around. We can’t do that if we leave.

    • jamar UNITED KINGDOM says:

mack me and you can leave we good life and return home and do that .these people in the island can`t stand it to return they had enough of 17years of good guyana life we can give up few years and then come back to the cold when we had enough.

  7. BADGIRL#7 CANADA says:

BAJEGAL, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? GUYANESE ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE
WHO ARE ILLEGAL IN OTHER COUNTRIES…. BEING ILLEGAL HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE DO NOT USE THE LAW OF THAT COUNTRY THE RIGHT WAY. STOP
TALKING ABOUT GUYANESE PEOPLE AS IF THEY ARE THE PLAGUE.

  8. UFO UNITED KINGDOM says:

it is just unfortunate for the reporter.Put your self in order.
