A 25-year-old Guyanese, who migrated for an employment opportunity, was fatally shot on Thursday while walking along a roadway in Beetham Gardens, Trinidad.
A Trinidad Express report yesterday said that Samuel De Souza became Trinidad’s “430th murder victim [Thursday] morning, after he was shot dead while walking along the roadway at Phase Four Beetham Gardens”.
Trinidad police, according to the article, said that at around 7.10 am that day De Souza, a carpenter, “was shot once in the back of the head by a lone gunman as he was walking near his home. The bullet exited through his face. Investigators said they believed De Souza was on his way to work, as a bag containing carpentry tools was found next to his body.”
De Souza, Trinidad police also said, was not known to have had any run-ins with the law. Investigators have also said no motive had been established for De Souza’s killing up to Thursday evening.
However, the Trinidad Express article stated one Beetham Gardens resident said De Souza may have been linked to a double murder in Diego Martin, Trinidad on Wednesday, in which two men, Wendell Rogers and Joel Medina were shot dead as they were driving along Jean Avenue.
When contacted yesterday a woman, who told Stabroek News De Souza was a distant cousin, said that she’d discovered yesterday that the man had been murdered but had not been informed of any details surrounding the man’s death. She further said that she was the man’s closest relative in Guyana and the others lived abroad.
“I only just learnt of his [De Souza’s] death and I can’t tell you anything about it because I was not informed of details,” the woman, who requested her name not by published, said. “I am his closest relative here…he has an aunt but she left the country and there is no one else.”
Meanwhile, a senior police source said the Guyana Police Force had not been informed of De Souza’s death by their counterparts in Trinidad.

Revenge killings and just plain killings are all the rage in T&T, just last week in Rio Claro, a criminal being taken to court by T&T Police was gunned down in cold blood in front of the court house, last year little Leah Lamming a six year old was taken off the street in St.James and later was found murdered. Trinidad and Tobago would be worst off than Guyana if it did not have that little oil and gas to get a little extras to build a nice terminal at Piarco, Long Circular and Trin City Malls and and so on.

With a better economy there would have been no need for this man to be in Trinidad and meet an untimely death. The government is indirectly responsible for Guyanese fleeing their shores and suffering the indignities of living undocumented. One has paid the ultimate price because of the racist voting patterns of Guyanese. There’ll be no progress for Guyana if we continue down this path. A government of national unity is needed.
The GOG is not INDIRECTLY responsible for this man’s demise, and knowing how you stay you would have blamed the GOG if this man had met similar fate in Guyana. And people have left BG/Guyana as far back ad I can remember, so this notion that people fleeing because of low wages or whatever is totally false, in fact a lot of Trinidadians today are of Guyanese origins. Some went to work in the oil fields, some went to teach and so on, in the early last century. And I beg to differ about racist people voting for the PPP, well not in my book, the PPP is the best party in the country, and a legacy politcal party at that in this country, and so why not vote for them, they are delivering, and it has not been easy for them, but they are trying by hook and crook. So I salute them, they not perfect, but they trying. We have a unified government, but it is up to you to join in. No alternating President one year an Amerindian, one year a Black and a Chinese that is folly and sounds racist to me, if that what you men by unity government.

Wow! 430th murder victim for the year so far, and counting.Take note all you blog heads out there who think Guyana is the worst place on earth with criminal activities.
Tell them billp, tell them, I use to live there in T&T and it is murder and mayhem all over the place, no running water in some areas, traffic jams that make New York City look like a garden tea party, and if they ever see the Lavantille and John John sections of Port-of-Spain they would think Georgetown’s poor sections is London. I don’t think the poor man did anything he just walking near his home and they just killed him as T&T is gang infested.
Relativistic comparisons of this nature depict the ignorance of the person penning it. What does it say then of Guyanese who continue to flood the shores of Trinidad and Tobago for the better life? They do this in spite of the high murder rate. Guyana would be emptied and deserted if that country throws open its borders to Guyanese wanting to leave. Ironically, the people leading the exodus would be those who voted for the ruling party. Hypocrites.
Most of the guyanese ran away. Some being caught in these crime abroad.
Some even take part in the crimes. Like exporting it.
The reason why we nag all the time, it is because we don’t want Guyana, to end up like T&T. Plus a man should focus on his own house first.
You’re right, billp, there are countries with higher murder rates per 100,000 pop. than Guyana, e.g. T.T., Jamaica, Colombia, South Africa, Iraq – countries to which Guyanese don’t usually immigrate; they go to much safer countries like USA, C’da, UK and the EU.

Life’s cheap and they are places here that make Buxton look like a summer camp.
My advice to my countrymen is get out as soon as possible and do not be enticed by the cheap rents in the crime hot spots. If you can’t afford to live in a proper place then the
investment of working in T&T isn’t worth it.
Tell them Davo, and Mr. Manning only cares about building those skyscrappers, nothing else, people in Arima have no running water, they have to use a garden hose to connect from a pipe way down the road, houses flood out in standing water for days and people have to live in them, they tlking about buidling subway to ease up traffic, but people suffering in T&T. If I didn’t get a chance to go to America I was going to head back to Guyana from T&T. Guyana better than T&T, and those Guyanese that never lived there, but just change a plane at Piarco should not talk

We have to wait and get the facts about this killing. The truth will reveal soon or later. If this guy was an innocent victim, it would be such a shame that he had to go out like this. If, on the other hand this was a payback for something he may have been invoved in (as suggested in the article) then only God know if is death is justified. Hope we get to the bottom of it ASAP.
