Diamond teen drowned while swimming at Rockstone

Police in Region Ten are currently investigating the drowning of an 18-year-old student on Monday at about 13:00 while he was on a sight-seeing expedition at Rockstone, Essequibo River, with his friends.

According to police, the body of Adiel Thomas, of 14th Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was recovered by a search party.

Inquiries revealed that Thomas and some friends had travelled to Linden for the Town Week celebrations. Upon arrival, they decided to visit Rockstone for a sight-seeing expedition. They hired a boat and went to Mosura Island, where they took photographs.

It is alleged that Thomas decided to take a swim in the river and invited his friends to join him. However, they declined, so he went into the river alone and began swimming to the deeper part.

His friends claimed that they were conversing while he was swimming, and after a few minutes, they turned to look for him but did not see him. An alarm was immediately raised but they received no response.

The incident was reported to the police, a search party was formed and the teen’s body was recovered.
