The majority of  councillors in the Region Four Regional  Democratic Council  on Wednesday voted in favour of  a motion  to suspend PPP/C councillor Kwame McCoy   from the council for 90 days for what they alleged is  his “disobedience at meetings.”

The statutory meeting of the RDC   was reconvened  on Wednesday at the Council’s Boardroom at Triumph, East Coast Demerara.

And under any other business councillors “expressed serious concern over the persistent disrespect shown at RDC meetings by Councillor Kwame Warren McCoy and his attitude  of disregard to the direction of the regional chairman,” a press release from the office of the RDC stated.

According to the release which was signed by Regional Chairman Clement Corlette,  Councillor R. Benfield submitted a formal complaint to the council outlining “the unbecoming conduct”  of councillor McCoy.

Councillors all agreed that at the meeting on February 16, Councillor McCoy was ruled to be out of order by the regional chairman  and ordered to be seated and desist from disrupting the meeting, but he refused to comply on several occasions, the release stated.

A motion was eventually moved  by  Benfield to suspend McCoy   from the council for 90 days for his disobedience at meetings and Councillor Anthony Haynes seconded it. The release stated that “the motion was then put to the vote and 14 councillors voted in favour and two voted against.”

When reached for a comment last evening, McKoy stated that he will make an official response to the issue today, only stating that the matter was, “Corlette’s bogus attempt to take revenge at me”.

Meanwhile, councillors also expressed concern over the non-functioning  air-conditioning system  and the incomplete electrical installations despite the substantial expenditure.   Consequently a special committee was established to enquire into all aspects of the contracts  for the construction of the new administrative building, installation of the A/C system  and the electricity system.  The special committee is to provide a report on its findings within two weeks to the regional chairman.

And councillors also raised the question of  what was referred to as the takeover of the loam pit by the Public Works Ministry  without consulting the regional chairman or the RDC.    Council agreed that the regional chairman should seek clarification from the Cabinet on the takeover of the regional asset without the knowledge of the council or the chairman, the release concluded.
