Winston Rodney who was bleeding profusely was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and subsequently transferred to the GPH and is in the Intensive Care Unit.
A 29-year-old man has since been taken into custody at the Fort Wellington Police Station after he reportedly hit the man on his head with a piece of wood.
Rodney’s sister, Nordia Rodney told Stabroek News that a head scan from the hospital proved that a bone broke in her brother’s head and is “resting on his brain.”
The doctors said her brother would require surgery but it would be “technical and he has a 50/50 chance to survive.” She also told this newspaper that her brother who is not responding to relatives has been vomiting blood.
The woman said that she is “praying and trusting in God for my brother. I am hoping to hear something from him when I go to see him tomorrow [today].”
Rodney, the father of a 16-year-old boy was returning home from an annual banquet at the Number 28 Church Hall when he was dealt the blow.
There are reports that he was engaged in a fight with his 29-year-old attacker but his sister said she is still not able to ascertain what exactly transpired. She said though that the assault must have stemmed from an old grievance. She said after the incident the man went first to the station and made a report that he just “lashed him.” Not realizing that the injury was so severe, the police let him go.
However, they arrested him after Rodney’s relatives gave statements later about the extent of the injury.
The man is claiming that he hit Rodney with a paling stave but Nordia said the doctors told her the blows seemed to come from a heavier object.
