Media proprietors group to focus on broadcast legislation, other issues

The Guyana Media Proprietors Association aims to actively examine current issues such as broadcast legislation in the developing local media industry and to safeguard the rights of media owners.

According to a press release the Association was registered as a not-for-profit organisation in April, 2010. Chairman of the Board Jacob Rambarran said it will focus on a number of critical issues including broadcast legislation, copyright, the emergence of new media technologies and their advantages to the Guyanese society and the interests of all local media owners.

As regard broadcast legislation, the Association has said it should be fair, equitable to every media house, reflect everyone’s interest and foster democracy. “We, Guyanese, must recognize that, we are governing ourselves. Therefore, the legislation must satisfy the expectations of all interest groups and help to promote democracy,” Rambarran said.

The Association also intends to implement projects, events and activities aimed at building the capacity of its members, particularly in understanding and taking advantage of emerging communication technologies and the cross-platform media arrangements facilitated by globalisation.
