A 33-year-old man who allegedly held another man at gunpoint and stole a quantity of items was on Monday admitted to bail in the sum of $150,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on September 17 at Georgetown, Colin Cooper, 33, of Albouystown, being armed with a gun, robbed Urley Small of items valued $600,115.
The father of five pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery under arms.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, the defendant accosted the complainant, placed a gun to his side and took away a number of items.
Attorney-at-law Ronald Burch-Smith who represented the accused told the court that his client was innocent. The lawyer said his client was not the owner of a gun and hence “it is impossible” for him to have been slapped with such a charge.
Burch-Smith contended that the charge was trumped-up and baseless.
The attorney then made an application that his client be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has a fixed address, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.
Acknowledging that his client has had previous brushes with the law, the lawyer said his client has an unblemished record of always attending court and reporting to the police station when required to do so.
The prosecutor had no objections to the bail application made by the attorney, but requested that it be in a substantial sum.
Cooper was later placed on $150,000 bail and his matter was transferred to Court Five for October 18.
