Ministry hosts rally for breast, cervical cancer awareness

The Ministry of Health hosted a walk and rally from the Square of the Revolution to the East La Penitence health centre aimed at boosting awareness of breast and cervical cancer on Tuesday.

Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran joined staff of the Regional Health Services and health care givers during the exercise which culminated with a rally at the health centre. In his address Dr Ramsaran noted that the ministry is heightening its activities as there are still many women who are unaware of cervical cancer and the VIA procedure used to detect it.

Dr Ramsaran urged women to have frequent check-ups and to submit to the VIA – visual inspection using acetic acid to detect cervical cancer. Booths were also set up to allow attendees at the rally to access information about breast and cervical cancer and to teach them to do breast self-examinations.

The minister said he was grateful for the participation of Digicel and AVON in boosting the ministry’s campaign. The ministry is also collaborating with Coordinator of Guyana Fashion Weekend Sonia Noel and the Mabaruma Heritage committee to stage a walk on Saturday from the Umana Yana to the City Mall where the ministry’s staff, officials and the participants of Guyana Fashion Week will interact with citizens on the issue.
