New supermarket opens at Bath, West Berbice

Andrea Arjune, co-owner of the Shop Smart Supermarket & General Store which was commissioned on Sunday told Stabroek News that the idea of the business was to “provide a proper service to the community.”

She said her husband Anil Arjune was involved in trading rice in wholesale and retail quantities but business “got slow” following the opening of the Berbice River Bridge.

The fully air-conditioned supermarket has been stocked with items that are not readily available in Berbice and Arjune said she would always try to “meet the needs of the customers.”

She urged persons to take advantage of a special offer where they would get a chance to win prizes with the purchase of $3,000 and over.

At the ceremony which was chaired by Faizal Jaffarally; coordinator of the National Communications Network/ Community Relations Officer, Region Six Administration, the couple offered praises to God as they venture into their new business.

Regional Chairman of Region Five Harrinarine Baldeo in brief remarks, congratulated “the young entrepreneurs for having the guts to enter into this multi-million dollar business… They had the confidence and took the risk to open this business.”

He noted that the “private sector is playing an active role in the development of the region” and that “the supermarket has added to the accomplishments…”

Also in attendance were also representatives of the Trading Distributions Inc, which supplies products from Geddes Grant Ltd.
