The Ministry of Home Affairs should honour Paul Slowe with the respect which he deserves

Dear Editor,

I refer to the article, ‘Ministry condemns Slowe,’ which appeared in the Stabroek News of June 9.

Slowe loves his country. As a professional policeman, Slowe spoke from a heart of care, concern and respect for the future of the organization he served with distinction for 37 years.

The Guyana Police Force is the major institution with authority for crime prevention nationwide. Given all the scandals, the bad press and the atrocities, for some of which it is alleged the force is culpable, it is consoling to Guyana and Guyanese everywhere, when finally, someone has found a heart of integrity, compassion, concern and courage to verbalize these issues so that a path towards reform can be plotted. It is sad that it has to be viewed as an attack.

Considering what the culture of the land has become, I wish the Ministry of Home Affairs had taken a little more time in assessing the statements made by Slowe before issuing a response. Sometimes we need to take time to afford ourselves a comprehensive view of a situation before dealing with it.

People prefer to hear the Paul Slowes of the nation venting their concerns because they bring trust and respect wherever they serve. In Slowe’s case, there is a uniqueness in his discipline and character that is exemplary.  His image gives hope to clean cops in high office. He will be picked as a fine example for our children to model.

Mr Slowe is to be congratulated for his extraordinary service to the Police Force. I think he is a true patriot. No one can take away the decency and integrity with which he served Guyana. I hope the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Force will honour him with the respect and gratitude he deserves.

Yours faithfully,
Pastor Kwesi Oginga
