No coverage for Berbice court matters

Dear Editor,

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that your reporters do not cover even a few of the most significant court decisions in Berbice. It is unfair to us in Berbice because we also support your paper. Just for reference, there was the manslaughter trial of Wazim Mohamed, which ended with a hung jury for the second time. Then there was the dismissal of charges of possession against Naresh Ranjohn and Imran Khan, and a separate case which was dismissed against Antonio Adams.

At the moment in the Berbice Assizes, Mahatma Dhanraj is being tried for felonious wounding and your reporters are nowhere to be seen. I wonder when you and others in high office will stop treating Georgetown as Guyana and stop ignoring Berbice.

Yours faithfully,
Charrandass Persaud

Editor’s note
It is not the case that we never report on court matters in Berbice. We carried a New Amsterdam court story in our Monday paper (September 20) on page 2, for example. Even if we have no reporters present in court, they will sometimes get the details of a case afterwards so a report can be written up. Where Georgetown is concerned, we only cover the high-profile criminal cases in the high court.
