Mayor’s Cup knockout tournament

Alpha United recorded the most comfortable victory to date in the annual Mayor’s Cup knockout tournament to secure the last quarter-final spot when they destroyed Golden Grove at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground on Wednesday night.

Riddim Squad also booked a quarter-final spot on Wednesday by defeating Grove Hi Tec 2 – 1 in the curtain raiser of the double-header.

Alpha United and Riddim Squad will now face off in the other round of the competition next week.

Riddim Squad’s Erville Stuart and Julian Forrest were responsible for getting two goals on the board against Grove Hi Tec that only got one goal, compliments of John Matthews.

The night saw Troylan Williams leading Alpha past Golden Grove 5 – 1 as he scored a second half double while being supported by Dwight Peters, Seon Grumble and Anthony Abrams, who each scored one goal apiece.

Randy Stoby scored Golden Grove’s lone goal in the match, which was keenly contested in the first half.

Alpha had numerous shots on goal because they easily stormed past the opposition’s defence but the first 45 minutes Alpha found it hard to get a shot past Brian Robertson who was performing brilliantly between the uprights.

However, the second half differed completely from the first with Golden Grove’s apparent lack of fitness being the problem. The side could not keep up with the Alpha United squad that was in cruise control.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) triumphed over BV Triumph 2 – 1 while Seawall FC created a major upset over defending champions, Pele, by sinking them 2 – 0.

This Sunday the action continues with GDF facing Uprising and BK International Western Tigers going head to head with Fruta Conquerors in the first two quarterfinal matches (Kizan Brummell)
