Alpha United draw 2-2 with Rosignol United

Frequent tournament champions Alpha United came up against matching play from Rosignol United to see the contest ending in an exciting 2-2 draw, when Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League continued last Wednesday at the GFC Ground, Bourda.

Dwain Jacobs after 15 minutes had put Alpha United ahead  1-0, but Rosignol leader Delroy Fraser made their victory short-lived when he evened the score with the first of his double from the penalty spot, a mere nine minutes later.

In the subsequent nine-minute increment Fraser prevailed again with an enterprising run and a clinical finish that gave the visitors a slim 2 –1 lead.

The Berbicians continued to put the fear in Alpha as their fast paced approach caused much discomfort to Alpha’s defence, splitting it open.

A powerfully struck right footer from 20 metres rebounded off the crossbar with the goal keeper well beaten. A few moments later, in another attack, a well-struck shot was guided around the back post for a corner but failed to produce a goal from the ensuing spot kick.

With Alpha desperately in search of the equalizer, all out attacks became more frequent, which led to Anthony Abrams negating the score on the sound of the half time whistle. At the restart both teams continued with the fast-paced game, but poor finishing from either side failed to add to the score. As the match approached the halfway stage the pace slowed a bit, but this did not deter the battle for midfield dominance which was evenly split. Alpha’s captain, Howard Lowe, failed to capitalize on the glorious opportunity to snatch a victory for his team, when his direct hit from the penalty spot sailed harmlessly over the crossbar, out of the ground and into the street with just a few minutes remaining.

In the earlier curtain raiser match-up, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Buxton United played to a goalless stalemate. This enabled each of the four teams to earn one point apiece.

Both GDF and Buxton squandered a few scoring opportunities in either half of their lackluster affair.

Currently with seven wins and two draws Alpha remain on their pedestal, leading with a 23 points tally.  Occupying the second spot is Rosignol United with 14 points; followed by GDF in third place one point adrift; in fourth place is Buxton United with 12 points, ahead of their East Demerara counterparts Victoria Kings with 11 points in fifth position.

The CONCACAF FIFA funded Super League action continues today at the GFC ground, Bourda, with a lone encounter from 18:00 hrs between Sunburst Camptown and Seawall FC.

Nigel “Powers” Codrington in tandem with Devon Forde will lead Camptown’s attack bolstered by midfielders Troy Prescod alongside Lance Raulston. Supportive in the defence are Orlando Gilgeous and Rishawn Sandiford, with custodian Richie Richards performing duties between the uprights.

Responding for FC are Garlan Lewis, Adami Hoyte, Tonie Lopes, Delyon Josiah, Zevon Atkinson and custodian Marvin Griffith.
