The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has said that its recent coaching clinic for 30 junior spin bowlers drawn from across the ancient county can certainly be rated a success.
The clinic, which was held at the Area `H’ ground last Sunday, was conducted by senior cricket coach Winston Smith and senior national left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul.
Among the persons attending the clinic were Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Shawn Perreira, Lloydel Lewis, Harrinarine Chattergoon, Joemal La Fleur, Avinash Wajid and Kevin Ramdeen.
Smith stated that the main aim of the camp was to get the young spinners to understand the importance of flight, bounce and turn since too many young spinners were only interested in bowling fast and flat as a strategy to bowl maidens in a limited over match.
He also focused on the bowling run up, action and follow through.
Chairman of the BCB Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster, who organised the clinic, urged the participants to put into practice what they had learnt and to always seek advice and assistance from coaches, senior players or past cricketers.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the clinic, Foster challenged them to aim for higher heights while noting that the board was investing heavily in developing new talent.
This clinic was the second of its kind after the board hosted one for 12 young cricketers earlier in the week.
The clinics are being held by the BCB during the rainy season to develop talent and a total of four would be held for wicketkeepers, spinners, fast bowlers and batsmen at the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels. The next clinic is scheduled to be held on May 22, for the county’s fast bowlers.
