The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) on Friday received a shot in the arm of 1$m to assist with its staging of its first division league and Street Playoff Series.

CATCHING THE SPIRIT! Trevor Rose, left, president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Association receives a cheque for $1m from Pepsi Brand Manager Alexis Crawford on Friday.

The current first division league which is set to recommence shortly and the staging of the Street Playoff Series are the beneficiaries of the sponsorship which was done under DDL’s Pepsi soft drink brand.

The GABA first division league has been halted because of the unavailability of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the GABA has indicated that the tournament will resume following the completion of rehabilitation works on the outdoor Burnham Basketball Court.

The remaining matches of GABA’s first division league will be played at the Burnham Basketball Court.

Trevor Rose, GABA’s president said that the Street Playoff Series will see the top four finishers of the league facing each other in a best-of three format.

Rose thanked DDL for the sponsorship which he said was timely.

“Before now the clubs were playing basically the league I should say, for just basically sweat and the love of the game, but now we would be able to reward them financially,” Rose said.

Alexis Crawford, Pepsi brand manager, said that “DDL and Pepsi are always ready to support any activity which will positively channel the energies of young Guyanese people and there was no hesitation on our part to come on board.”

She wished the GABA a successful tournament adding, “We expect basketball to be played in the Pepsi spirit and to be highly competitive and in so doing, develop the young sportsmen and women of Guyana, as well as the level of the sport. We also wish to encourage patrons of the game to support our talented athletes in like manner.”
