GNIC, DCC face off in Haier Cup final

Playing in the semi-finals at the GDF Ground, DCC defeated Malteenoes by eight wickets, while over at the GCC Ground, Bourda, the GNIC team mounted a nine-wicket victory over their rivals, Everest.

Malteenoes found themselves all out for a mere 86 runs using just over half (21.2) of the allotted overs. Malteenoes struggled to make runs off the restrictive bowling of Jermaine Horatio and Edward Bernette. Vishal Narayan, 14, was the top scorer for Malteenoes, before  he was bowled by Bernette. Carlos La Rose, with 10 runs, was the only other player to inch in a double-figure score, before he was caught by Larry Smith off a delivery from Bernette.

Bernette took a total four wickets for 29 runs off six overs, but was surpassed by Horatio who took five wickets for 22 runs in the eight overs that he bowled.

The Malteenoes side included the skills of national junior players, Kwame Cross and Shaquille Williams who both batted in the middle order, but who failed to make any substantial score. Cross was dismissed after he mistimed an attempted straight drive and was caught at mid-wicket by Matthew Mark off the bowling of Horatio. Williams’ dismissal was as a result of a superb take at short mid-wicket by Smith, off the bowling of Dennis Squires.

For DCC, it was 42 from Squires, partnered with Jahron Byron that structured their 90–3 from 18.2 overs. The unbeaten knock by Squires included five fours and two sixes. Byron, also not out, made a 22-run contribution that was laced with three fours.

The Malteenoes side put in a good effort in the field with Seon Daniels taking two wickets for 22 runs, off seven overs. Things started bleakly for DCC, after Daniel Gravesande, who ended with 1-21, captured the third wicket with the score at 15.

However Byron and Squires quickly picked up the pace and at 86–3, with more than half of the overs to go, DCC were certified as the winners. It was a four from Squires that cemented the team’s win and brought the game to a close.

GNIC had Everest all out at 165 runs from only 35 overs, despite a fighting half century from Chandrapaul Hemraj, whose innings came to an end when he was caught by Rawle Merrel off a delivery from Ronoley Bourne. Hemraj scored 62 which included four fours and a six. In all, Bourne took two wickets for 31 runs in the six overs he bowled, and was equally joined by Merrel (2–18) and Jermaine Grovesnor (2–32).

In their innings, GNIC easily made their required runs off 28.2 overs, compliments of half centuries from Elton Baker and Ovid Richardson. Baker stroked a fluent 80 which included eight fours, while Richardson added 56 that included three fours.

Bowler Javed Rasheed took the only wicket to fall, which was that of Marvin Munroe.
