Top junior tennis players Shawna Gentle and Gavin Lewis secured easy wins when the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) Nigel’s Supermarket Junior Classic Tennis Tournament began yesterday at the tennis courts of the Pegasus Hotel and the National Park.
Lewis handed a 6 – 1, 6 – 1 defeat to Mindat Lallbeharry in his first match in the round robin qualifiers while Aretta Dey was on the receiving end of a 2-6, 1-6 defeat by Gentle.
Dey, though, was able to end the day on a winning note when she defeated Kristy Lopes 4 – 0, 2 – 4, 10 – 8 in an under-14 encounter.
Second seed, Daniel Lopes vanquished
David Rose 6 – 2, 6 – 1 in group “A” round robin action in the junior division.
It was also a good day for brothers, Saevion and Seanden David-Longe, who each recorded wins in group “C”.
Saevion David-Longe defeated Nomechandra Persaud 6-0, 6-0 while in the 18 and under category, the match between Rajesh Ramrattan and Seanden David-Longe went to three games before David Longe prevailed 6 – 3, 3 – 6, 6 – 3.
And, Dominic Fraser, participating in both the boys’ 18-years-and-under and 14-and-under categories, chronicled two wins.
In the 18-years–and-under category Fraser scored a 6 – 3, 6 – 2 win over Rajan McKay, to follow his earlier 4 – 0, 4 – 0 win against Gerad Budram in the 14-years -and-under category.
