Prashad pledges ongoing support for arts, craft producers

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad recently pledged his ministry’s continued support to the Guyana Arts and Craft Producers Association and gave assurances of its readiness to engage new members in order to better develop the arts and crafts industry.

Meeting with the Association’s newly-elected executive, Prashad commended the group for collaborating with the public and private sectors in executing their activities. He noted that it has grown over the years and has participated in events in countries such as Brazil and Barbados.

The sector is also attracting persons interested in eco, nature and adventure tourism, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said.

Prashad noted that ‘Destination Guyana’ is also attracting a number of small and medium-sized cruise ships and yachts. Arts and craft manufacturers can benefit from this, since tourists would want to take home souvenirs.

The ministry is also examining the possibilities of hosting an annual international arts and craft show to promote, showcase and market quality local products.

Prashad also urged the producers to seek opportunities through the Small Business Act, which provides incentives for the growth and support of micro and small businesses.

The Association’s new executive, elected at its fourth Annual General Meeting, comprises: Denzil Hollingsworth, President; Deonarine Lowkashwar, Vice-President; Habibah Atherley McGregor, General Secretary; Doreen Morrison, Treasurer; Juliana Hughes, Assistant Treasurer; and Jack Farley, Public Relations Officer.
