Malali man shot during robbery at restaurant

Malali resident Wilbert Hall was robbed and shot to the abdomen while in a restaurant at McKenzie, Linden.

Hall, 56, was admitted to the Linden Hospital Complex and was up to late last night in stable condition.

The man was attacked some time around 9pm while in the Heng Fung restaurant at Co-op Present, McKenzie. A lone gunman, who had just purchased cigarettes from the bartender, “just walked up to Hall and shoot him” and snatched a bag he was carrying.”

An employee said the gunman, a regular at the restaurant, entered the establishment and walked straight to the counter, where he bought three cigarettes. Hall was behind the perpetrator.

After the attacker collected the cigarettes, he turned around and launched his attack on the unsuspecting Hall, the employee recounted.

The gunman then ran from the establishment with a quantity of cash and other valuables that Hall had been carrying.

Eyewitnesses further reported that there was a man on a motorcycle waiting for the gunman outside the restaurant. The men subsequently escaped.

This newspaper understands that Hall had just returned from Georgetown, where he had taken his wife to see a doctor. The man, eyewitnesses said, had just finished loading his boat to return home and went into the restaurant to buy something to drink.
