ECHO to start recycling programme in schools

The Environmental Com-munity Health Organisation (ECHO) is finalising arrangements to start a recycling programme in 40 primary schools in Georgetown.

The programme will be facilitated through ECHO clubs and will enlist the assistance of 500 children, according to a press release from the organisation. It aims to reduce by 35% the amount of plastic bottles along roadways, on parapets and in drains.

The pilot programme, called ‘Changing the look of our school environment improving its health’ will be evaluated after six months. It will require the children to collect all plastic bottles used in schools and to deposit them into special collection areas that will be set up.

An evaluation will be done to determine how much litter was reduced in school compounds and identify any modifications that are needed.

The programme will then be replicated in other schools and communities. ECHO is encouraging interested organisations and businesses to partner with it to make this programme a success.
