Pensioner gets $20,000 bail on larceny charge

Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton granted a pensioner $20,000 bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with stealing bearings worth $89,400 from the Kei-Shars Gift Shop.

The allegation against Michael Moore, 65, is that between June 15 and July 28 at Sussex Street, Georgetown, he stole 27 bearings valued $89,400; property of Kei-Shars Gift Shop. The accused, of 25 Robb Street, denied the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him.

When the court asked the defendant to state his occupation, he said that he was unemployed and indicated to the court that he was a pensioner.

No facts of what transpired in the stated period were presented to the court; however, Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey did not object to bail, he only asked that the court take into account the value of the stolen items.

In response, Magistrate Octave-Hamilton pointed out that the court also needed to consider that the accused is a pensioner.

Moore was ordered to appear in Court One on September 13.
