NA woman loses arm in pit bull attack

A New Amsterdam resident has lost part of her right arm and is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), after she was viciously attacked by three of her nephew’s pit bull dogs.

Whilhemia Saul, 65, was at her Stanleytown, New Amsterdam home at around 11 Tuesday morning and she decided to go downstairs to pick some mangoes. The unsuspecting woman had no idea that her nephew’s three pit bulls were loose, and was attacked by the three when she ventured into the yard.

A source close to the woman related that residents nearby heard her screams and ran over to assist, but they were unable to enter the yard for fear of being attacked themselves. As a result, the source said, the residents began pelting objects at the dogs, but this did not deter their attack on the hapless woman. In a courageous act, Saul finally managed to drag herself close to her fence, where the public-spirited residents were able to rescue her.

The woman’s nephew, a taxi driver who occupies the bottom flat of the house, upon hearing of his aunt’s unfortunate incident, hurried home and transported her to the New Amsterdam Hospital. As a result of her having to undergo surgery to her arm, Saul was transferred to the GPH at around 3am yesterday.

An official at the New Amsterdam Hospital commented that Saul is a strong woman, having survived the severe injuries she received on her legs, arms, shoulders, head and other parts of her body. When last visited, she was said to be in and out of consciousness.

Up to press time yesterday, however, Saul had fully regained consciousness and was said to be in a stable condition. Her relatives were also said to be awaiting word from doctors on when she would be discharged from the hospital.
